Round 5 Match Summaries

DC North East Blaze, Thu Mar 6, 2014 1:41PM

 Championship

Blaze started strongly, using the space well over both transverse lines, the defensive pressure was done with purpose.
Blaze played as a team and backed each other up.
Micaela Wilson was outstanding once again even after being in bed all week with a virus, Ella Priestley stepped up for 4 qtrs this week, Libby Birch shut down the Ariels options over the transverse line and Simone Nalder, who was unable to attend training this week due to illness, was definitely hitting the target with 92% accuracy.

Q2 No changes.

Blaze and Ariels went goal for goal, Blaze handled the pressure well this week making the right choices in the attack end.

Bron Taylor was a stronger option getting over that transverse line on our centre passes.

Q3

Hillary Grubb came on into WD, as we tried to force Ariels to change it up on their attack end.

Micaela Wilson, with her hands over the shot and rebounding was stand out.

Blaze needed to play smart netball this qtr. It was about controlling the ball and converting the centre passes.

Q4

In a tight game, there was no room for error, something Blaze hadn’t mastered until this week. It was about making the right choices and that we did.

It was a complete team effort, Blaze were up by 4 and lifted the intensity and defensive pressure to secure the win. Young gun Libby Birch came back on in WD and worked well to create turnovers with Ella, Ty and Micaela in our defence end to walk away with a more comfortable winning margin.

Starting 7 (Nikki (GK) Katelyn (GD) Casey (WD) Elle (C) Maddie (WA) Skye (GA) Julia (GS)

Blaze started the game with good intensity and strong defensive pressure, with the defenders work in the Ariels ring dictating play. The desire to post a win was obvious but it was clear that Blaze needed to settle in the 2 nd Qtr and reduce the turnovers when in possession, and improve decision making. At the change Blaze trailed by 1

Blaze started Q2 with Sam moving to WA. Blaze contested the ball fiercely and got on top the one on one contests, enabling Blaze to go into half time leading 29-28 with Nikki, Casey and Sam making valuable contributions. To open up the game Blaze needed to find a way to break the Ariels wall defence in the 2nd half.

The 3rd Qtr began with Lynsey in GD and Saige into C. The quarter was hotly contested with the Blaze midcourt working hard to create attacks. Every player worked hard to make sure the Ariels got no easy possessions. Blaze opened up a break but allowed Ariels to come back and again led by a single goal at the last break. Nikki, Lynsey and Saige all had strong quarters.

In the last quarter, Blaze showed great character and fought the game out against a very determined Ariels outfit, holding on to their 1 goal margin (38-37) in a thrilling game. Every member of the squad made a contribution in an effort that will hopefully kick start the season.

The Division 1 team needs to work on playing 15 minutes of solid netball per quarter. The closer they get to this, the more good results will follow.

Q1

The girls were determined to get off to a great start and they combined well across the court to set up a little lead at the break.
Jess and Maddie were providing plenty of drive out of defence while Sid and Grace were working well and making the most of their opportunities in attack.

Q2
We were able to extend our lead at half time by some excellent defensive pressure all over the court.Whilst our lead was 7 at half time and we were happy with the effort, we still needed to convert more of our opportunities from turn overs.
Linda was beginning to stamp her authority in the centre while Maddi W was dominant in WA.

Q3
Ariels showed why they are one of the favourites to make finals in this quarter. Their goalers increased their physical pressure in the circle and changes in our defensive end were required. Michelle came into GD and worked tirelessly for the rest of the quarter. The first 10 minutes of the quarter belonged to Ariels as they ate away at the lead. Changes were made through the midcourt as Ariels WA was beginning to control the match. Anica was given the job of trying to shut her down and she produced an awesome effort. The last 5 minutes were goal for gaol with us taking at 1 goal lead into the last quarter.

Q4
The last quarter was a tough, physical and entertaining 15 minutes.
The experience of the Ariels outfit began to get on top of our inexperienced girls. Although we continued to turn the ball over and created opportunities in attack, we were unable to capitalise on these due to some poor decision making under pressure. When Sid had to be taken out of the game due to cramp with 5 minutes to go it was always going to be tough with Tee coming on with no time to warm into the game. To Tee's credit she hit the court with purpose and was a massive focal point for us in attack. Unfortunately in the last few minutes a couple of decisions went against us and the game was out of reach. All credit must go to Ariels who never gave up and worked hard to get back into the game and put themselves into a winning position. It was great learning experience for us and there were plenty of positives to take out of the game.
