Blaze Support Motor Neurone Disease

Congratulations Stacey Gannon

"Queen of the Lake"!!

On Sunday 28th February a number of Blaze players, officials and families made the trip North East, up the Hume Freeway to Benalla.  2010 signifies the third time the "Act to D-feet MND" sporting festival has been held around the beautiful Benalla Lake Foreshore, raising funds for critical research into Motor Neurone Disease.  Thanks to Georgia Rodger and Sarah Van Nieukerk for coordinating our participation in this event.

The day kicked off early and competitors could choose one or more events to compete in:

  • 8.30am two cycle events - 89km and 26km
  • 10am walk the lake
  • 11am team relay (6 runners – 2km leg)
  • 12pm king & queen of the lake race

Blaze had many players and friends/family attending.  Congratulations to all who participated, including:

  • Womens winning relay consisting of Georgia Rodger, Maddie Hickey, Sam Coppinger, Alex Harriman, Bron Taylor and Stacey Gannon.
  • Second womens relay team came in just behind in 3rd place consisting of Bec Kelly, Sarah Van Nieukerk, Emma Wallmeyer, Morgan Harriman and Jacinta Benson. (Special mention to Emma and Morgan who ran twice, as this team was one short).
  • Championship Coach Karen Worland and family did the walk of the lake.
  • Liz Young, arrived a little too late to do her planned walk of the lake, so in true team spirit, Youngy sprinted the last 200m of each 2k leg with the relay runners to egg them on and help them finish strongly.

Of course there was a big win on the day, congratulations to Stacey Gannon who took out the "Queen of the Lake" title in the main race.

More photo's below - a great day had by all!
